Asasah-First PPI Certified MFI in Pakistan

 

Asasah has been certified that Asasah is meeting Progress out of Poverty Index (PPI) Certification Standards of both Basic & Advance levels. The certification has been issued by Grameen Foundation US. Recieving this certification, Asasah has become First Microfinance Institution (MFI) in Pakistan, and 15th in the world who is using Progress out of Poverty Index (PPI) maintaining its all standards.

In the first week of May 2012, a representative of Grameen Foundation US visited Asasah to assess whether Asasah is adhering to the standards of PPI while using PPI in its system. The representative of Grameen Foundation US spend a week with Asasah meeting the management, staff and Asasah’s members (beneficiaries) in the field.

Last year with the support of Plan International-Pakistan, Asasah had institutionalized PPI and using the tool to target poor communities to be served. Asasah is the first MFI in Pakistan who is using PPI as a poverty targeting and measurement tool.

Clients are not educated and may not even understand Urdu. Perhaps an appropriate translation in regional languages is also required. Also, Community Development Officers require a deeper understanding of the concept of PPI as they are at the front-end in this process.
